Client Introduction

The Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) is a global, government-supported initiative helping businesses and financial institutions integrate nature into decision-making. Its framework guides organisations to identify, assess, and report how they depend on and impact nature, and how this creates both risks and opportunities.

By making nature-related issues visible, comparable, and decision-useful, TNFD aims to shift capital flows toward activities that are nature-positive. The framework is science-based and aligned with international sustainability standards, helping companies and investors build resilience, strengthen disclosures, and support the global transition to an economy that works with nature.

‍The Challenge

For its 2025 Status Report, launched during Climate Week NYC, TNFD set out to show a clear picture of market progress in adopting and aligning with its framework. Alongside its own survey of corporates and financial institutions, TNFD commissioned select data partners, including CDP, Bloomberg and Net Purpose with consultancy Oliver Wyman leading analysis of provided datasets.  Neural Alpha led the AI component of the project leveraging Responsible Capital to create a first of a kind, bespoke, AI-led TNFD alignment assessment.

TNFD were particularly interested in exploring how AI and Large Language Models (LLMs) could reveal evidence of alignment beyond traditional methods — identifying not just where companies mention TNFD, but where they demonstrate intentional application of its guidance and processes.

Neural Alpha’s Responsible Capital platform was chosen to deliver rapid, scalable research on corporate disclosures, creating innovative datasets to feed into the Status Report and to strengthen TNFD’s internal analysis and engagement.

Our Solution

The project showcased the unique strengths of Responsible Capital. Using our proprietary sustainability fluent AI LLM architecture and global disclosure database we combined large-scale search with deep semantic assessment to deliver structured datasets detailing global TNFD alignment and adoption trends.

Our three-stage workflow included:

·         Filtering over 1.4 million disclosures to identify organisations using TNFD language.

·         Semantic screening to distinguish genuine application from incidental or aspirational references.

·         Deep analysis of a refined shortlist of ~600 organisations, plus an additional 600 assessed for use of TNFD’s LEAP process (Locate, Evaluate, Assess, Prepare).

Each company was assessed against three dimensions:

·         14 Recommended Disclosures - evidence of alignment with specific guidance.

·         6 General Requirements - overall standards, approach and scope of reporting.

·         LEAP process - adoption of TNFD’s practical pathway, whether within or outside of formal TNFD reporting. 

Outcomes

Our assessment produced structured datasets with True / False classifications, natural-language explainations on how disclosures aligned, or were still evolving in line with TNFD guidance, together with metadata detailing model assumptions, text citations and sources. This allowed TNFD to:

·         Identify the number and profile of organisations demonstrating meaningful alignment.

·         Map disclosure practices across the Recommended Disclosures and General Requirements.

·         Gain fresh insight into how companies are using the LEAP process as part of their reporting journey.

·         Confidently run cross-sectional analysis by sector and jurisdiction, and integrate with other data,

          thanks to reference data and unique identifiers.

The datasets were incorporated directly into the TNFD 2025 Status Report, offering a unique perspective that validated and complemented the voluntary survey results. They also provided TNFD with intelligence to guide future engagement with companies and markets.

Conclusion

Responsible Capital has already proven its value for portfolio assessment, benchmarking, and disclosure analysis. The unique scale of this project further demonstrates its power as a full platform for structuring novel, universe level exploratory research and generating rapid dataset creation on complex sustainability topics.

By contributing to the TNFD 2025 Status Report, our platform helped deliver innovative insights on how companies worldwide are beginning to align with nature-related disclosure standards — reinforcing TNFD’s role in shaping a more sustainable financial system.
