How BGF uses Neural Alpha to transform portfolio company monitoring and sustainable value creation

How BGF uses Neural Alpha to transform portfolio company monitoring and sustainable value creation
The challenge
Business Growth Fund (BGF) is one of the UK's most active investors in growing businesses, with a portfolio of approximately 194 active companies spanning construction, technology, healthcare, business services and consumer sectors. BGF's ESG programme is led by a dedicated team focused on driving measurable improvement across the portfolio and demonstrating systematic progress to LPs - in an increasingly ESG-conscious private markets environment.
BGF survey portfolio companies and provide tailored ESG guidance via structured benchmarking and ESG healthcheck reports on an annual basis. Historically this relied extensively on manual data gathering, research and traditional tools limiting the breadth and depth of analysis possible.
Increasing LP reporting requirements and emerging sustainability topics such as nature and climate risk have required analysing ever larger volumes and variety of data. As the scope and ambition of BGF's ESG programme grew, the team looked to AI as a way to deliver much more detailed and tailored sustainable value creation advice and deeper peer group competitor benchmarking analytics.
“Neural Alpha’s AI capabilities for deep sustainable value creation, benchmarking, portfolio company monitoring and engagement is market leading — Roshni Bandesha, Head of ESG & Sustainability, BGF
The solution
BGF leveraged Neural Alpha's AI-powered due diligence, research and report generation capabilities to build an automated ESG analysis and reporting process across its full portfolio encompassing news, portco disclosures and filings, survey and other data and models.
A structured assessment framework was built using Neural Alpha’s reporting module templates and designed across Environmental, Social and Governance pillars - complemented by materiality analysis and peer benchmarking - mapped directly to BGF's existing reporting structure expanding on survey data already collected annually through a third party supplier.
Each ESG Healthcheck report consolidates multiple historical outputs and is tailored to the opportunities and challenges faced by each portfolio company. Each report includes peer benchmarking against comparable companies in the same sector, a double materiality analysis identifying the ESG issues most relevant to each company's specific stage of growth, and a prioritised set of recommended actions with clear financial business cases for investing in sustainable value creation using intuitive financial metrics such as Net Present Value (NPV) and payback periods.
A separate climate risk report was produced for each company, visualising physical and transition climate risks specific to their asset locations across the UK. This added a new dimension of analysis understanding sustainability risks at portfolio scale.
The results
The process was deeply collaborative. BGF's sustainability team worked closely with Neural Alpha throughout to design the outputs, align on structure and refine the methodology - ensuring the final reports reflected both the rigour of BGF's existing methodology and the depth that AI-powered analysis makes possible.
The result is a scalable, repeatable reporting pipeline that generates 194 individual company ESG and Physical Climate risk reports - extensively consolidating manual processes with an automated workflow that can be re-run annually with no manual steps. Portfolio companies now receive a single, concise, peer-benchmarked report with a clear recommended actions section that spotlights exactly where to focus and why - making the analysis useful not just to sustainability professionals but to every CEO and CFO across the BGF portfolio.
The AI-powered process also enabled BGF's sustainability team to focus on what matters most: sustainable value creation insights that drive meaningful conversations with portfolio companies.
