The client
Our client was Climate Advisers, an NGO. Working closely with visual design and frontend developers MG Strategy & Design, Neural Alpha developed a sophisticated backend infrastructure powering Lucida, an exciting new transparency initiative for protecting tropical forests.
The challenge
The brief was to deliver comprehensive data engineering capabilities for financial and environmental data on companies and physical assets linked to tropical agriculture in high-risk locations, including concession locations, ownership structures and financing structures.
What we built
Working alongside a global multidisciplinary team of economists, environmental researchers and communications professionals, Neural Alpha delivered the Lucida database, ETLs and API for powering advanced supply chain and deforestation analysis.
We used our strong data engineering and data integration capabilities, all the time in continuous collaboration with the customer and delivery partners as the concept evolved and ideas became more clearly defined.
The results
The platform provided unprecedented transparency, highlighting illegal forest conversion and unsustainable land use. Using cutting-edge visualisations and other interactive tools, it enabled civil society actors to investigate the leading actors driving deforestation.
Lucida utilizes innovative processing systems to integrate data on corporate financing and structures with on-the-ground impacts, and surfaces that data through stunning visualizations and incisive analysis. Lucida provides access to previously hard-to-obtain or expensive-to-access data and focuses on ensuring the tool and insights are accessible and comprehensible.
Neural Alpha delivered the data requirements, engineering and analytical solutions for the launch of a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) platform for gathering feedback from key users, donors and NGOs, on time and on budget.
